For the SALTO FOUNDATION, this race is about more than kilometers and finish times. It shows that sport can unlock opportunities, connect people and change lives.

The SALTO FOUNDATION is again the main sponsor of the race. This year it is taking its commitment beyond the city's borders by joining forces with Free to Run, an international organization with a mission to advance gender equity globally through running. Free to Run offers running and movement-based leadership, resilience, and mental health programs for adolescent girls and young women living in some of the world's most challenging places, including Afghanistan, Iraq and Palestine.

When running means freedom

Human rights lawyer and ultrarunner Stephanie Case founded Free to Run in 2014. The organization works in conflict-affected and highly vulnerable regions, where women and girls are hit hardest by restrictions on their rights and on their freedom to move. In these places, simply going out for a run is a way of reclaiming space, confidence and community.

The SALTO FOUNDATION is closely involved in helping Free to Run grow. The Foundation sees the partnership with the SALTO 15K as a long-term commitment and will develop new initiatives over the coming editions. These initiatives have two aims: to strengthen the bond between the two organizations and to show what sport can do as a driver of social change.

Running creates opportunities for women and girls in challenging contexts to claim public space and show their communities what they are capable of. Through our partnership with the SALTO FOUNDATION, young women from Free to Run will take their place on the 15K start line in San Sebastián, alongside women whose lives may look very different but whose right to move freely is the same. We hope this shared experience inspires more people to take action for gender equity, wherever they run.

Sarah Murray

Executive Director, Free to Run

From a refugee camp to the streets of San Sebastián

Three young Afghan women from the Free to Run community, who were forced to flee their homeland in 2021 when the de-facto Government came to power, will travel to San Sebastián with support from the SALTO FOUNDATION. On Saturday they will train with the group of Gipuzkoan women who have been preparing since May. On Sunday they will line up together at the start of the 15K.

On race day, women in different countries will run 15 kilometers in their own cities at the same time. This symbolic gesture links women from very different realities through one shared act of running.

At the SALTO FOUNDATION, we believe sport is one of the most powerful tools we have to build fairer, more inclusive communities. Supporting the SALTO 15K year after year is our way of bringing that belief to life in the heart of San Sebastián. This year, with Free to Run teams joining us, the event carries a message that reaches far beyond the finish line. It is a powerful reminder that women and girls in Afghanistan, Iraq, or Palestine must not be forgotten: every woman deserves the freedom to run.

Javier Roquero

Salto Co-Founder and Chairman of the Salto Foundation

A race with impact

The race stands on values the SALTO FOUNDATION shares: sustainability, inclusion, equality and solidarity. The race offers 5K and 15K distances and three categories: running, handbike and rollers. It is open to everyone who finds in running a way to stay active, share experiences and be part of something bigger.

This commitment to women's participation also shows in the free training program for women. The Department of Sport of the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa runs the program as part of Emakumeok Mugimenduan. In its third year, more than 200 women have taken part.

Join the race

The Salto 15K takes place on Sunday 25 October.
