The SALTO FOUNDATION, the Biogipuzkoa Health Research Institute, and the Hegalak Zabalik Foundation are working together on the EDONOLA study which explores how structured physical exercise affects people receiving treatment for lymphoma.

Researchers in Gipuzkoa are advancing cancer research by incorporating sports and exercise into the treatment and care of lymphoma patients. The Biogipuzkoa Health Research Institute is leading the EDONOLA project, funded by the SALTO FOUNDATION and supported by the Hegalak Foundation, to study how structured exercise can benefit people undergoing cancer treatment. One of the first efforts of its kind for lymphoma patients, the project brings together science, healthcare, sports, and community organizations across Gipuzkoa.

As part of the project, a new ergospirometer, an advanced system that measures how the heart and lungs respond during exercise, has been installed at the Hegalak Sports Center in central Donostia to conduct stress tests on lymphoma patients receiving immunochemotherapy. This accessible, health-focused facility provides an ideal setting for the study's physical assessments, while the equipment helps researchers better understand how patients' bodies respond throughout treatment.

The effort – which unites research, community, education, business, and health-focused sports facilities – is possible thanks to the teamwork of the SALTO FOUNDATION, the Biogipuzkoa Health Research Institute, the Hegalak Zabalik Foundation, the University of the Basque Country (EHU), and the Hegalak Sports Center.

Edonola project: How does exercise impact quality of life for lymphoma patients? 

\n\n

The EDONOLA project is a research study that examines how a combination of strength and aerobic exercises, planned and supervised by experts, affects lymphoma patients receiving immunochemotherapy.

The primary goal of the study is to determine whether this exercise program helps patients feel and function better than those receiving standard care.

Izaskun Zeberio, who leads the Molecular Oncology Group at Biogipuzkoa, heads the study. She works closely with Professor Sara Maldonado and her team from the Department of Physical Education and Sports at the University of the Basque Country (EHU).

The study is now running at university hospitals in Donostia, Galdakao, and Araba, with patient recruitment planned to finish by the end of 2026. At Donostia University Hospital, the exercise program will move from the hospital to the Hegalak Sports Center, offering more flexibility and better conditions for the physical tests.

Cutting-edge research and therapy technology

EDONOLA uses advanced technology, such as the latest Medisoft (Ergometrix) ergospirometer, to run detailed stress tests by analyzing exhaled gases. Researchers from Biogipuzkoa, Hospital Donostia – Onkologikoa, and the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) use this equipment together for in-depth analysis in the program.

A key partnership for health and research

Biogipuzkoa, part of the integrated public healthcare system serving the Donostia region, leads the EDONOLA project as the primary scientific partner. The institute works to advance research in medicine, public health, and health services, and helps turn scientific discoveries into real improvements in patient care. By working with Osakidetza, the Basque Health Service, Biogipuzkoa helps ensure the study generates evidence that benefits patients and the broader healthcare system.

To support the study, two key agreements have been established. One is an equipment lease between the SALTO FOUNDATION and the Hegalak Zabalik Foundation. The other is an agreement between Biogipuzkoa and the Hegalak Sports Center to provide access to the facilities needed for the research. Eider Mendoza, rotating president of the Hegalak Zabalik Foundation, and Javier Roquero, president of the SALTO FOUNDATION, formalized the partnerships by signing the agreements.
